Since its inception in 1995, Bookfest has been held annually in early May, attracting several thousand visitors who browse over 100,000 books, magazines, games, puzzles, CDs, and DVDs.
It’s a relaxed event, with a sausage sizzle and homemade ginger beer available while you browse.
Parking is free and plentiful, though do keep an eye on the two-hour time zone limits. Street parking can be found on Fergusson Drive, and there’s a large, shared car park at the rear of the building off Brown Street.
What makes Bookfest special is that all proceeds go towards supporting various community projects. As the Heretaunga Bookfest Charitable Trust’s major annual fundraiser, the event has raised over $500,000 since it began, with much of the focus on supporting youth in the Upper Hutt area.
It’s also a wonderful example of local businesses and community groups coming together to make a positive impact, with many of them lending their support to help make the event happen.
