Why I picked this book

I’ve always enjoyed thrillers, but this one stood out with its unique twist: the protagonist, Stacey, is investigating her own murder - yes, she’s dead. I love mysteries, and the idea of solving a crime from the perspective of the deceased was too intriguing to pass up. Plus, I was in the mood for something light, fun, and just a little bit supernatural, making this the perfect pick.

What’s it about?

Stacey was trying to live her best life, but now she’s dead. But why hasn't she passed on? Could it be her fatal car accident is actually murder? Detectives Ed Beaufontaine and Rose Garafino have a long list of suspects, chief among them Stacey's fiancé, Liam. His business dealings and new relationship with Emily Jackson are raising a few eyebrows. As the detectives dig deeper, so does Stacey. With nothing but time on her hands, she forensically examines her past relationships – her pathological ex, controlling psychologist, and toxic girlfriends – realising she might have been better off without them. She's hoping she can steer the detectives in the right direction before she's doomed to wander for eternity. Because in the city of angels and 12-step programs, even the dead need a little help from time to time.

My takeaway

What I really enjoyed about 12 Steps to a Long and Fulfilling Death was the fresh concept of investigating a murder from the perspective of the deceased. Stacey’s quest to uncover the truth about her own death added a quirky layer to the usual murder mystery. The supernatural elements were light but intriguing, adding just the right amount of intrigue without overshadowing the mystery.

The pacing worked well, as the story gradually unveiled clues about Stacey’s death while mixing suspense with subtle supernatural touches. I appreciated the engaging characters, from Stacey’s role as the determined protagonist to the quirky and somewhat suspicious supporting cast, like the lead detective and the untrustworthy exes. They all kept me guessing about their involvement in the mystery.

Overall, 12 Steps to a Long and Fulfilling Death is an enjoyable, light mystery that blends suspense with a supernatural twist. It’s not emotionally heavy, but it keeps you entertained and curious, making it perfect for a quick and engaging read.
