About WellyBooks

WellyBooks is a small, local space for readers, thinkers, and anyone who needs a bit of breathing room.

Our story

After two decades overseas, I returned to New Zealand three years ago and settled in Wellington to be closer to family. I’m a juggling mum and lifelong ‘happy workaholic’ — and in 2024, a breast cancer diagnosis forced me to slow down. It was the kind of reset you don’t plan for, but one that made me realise just how much I’d been putting myself last.

So I picked up a book. Then another. And slowly, I rediscovered the joy of reading — not just as a pastime, but as a way to carve out time for myself.

WellyBooks started as a way to track what I was reading and hold onto that feeling. Now, it’s grown into something more — a space to share great stories, support local bookish things (like the brilliant Wellington City Libraries, book fairs, and indie bookshops), and encourage others to make space for themselves too.

WellyBooks is local on purpose — staying small, grounded, and making the most of this city I’m lucky to call home.

Whether you’re here to recharge, find your next read, or just carve out a little breathing room — I’m glad you’re here.

What you’ll find here

At WellyBooks, you’ll discover:

  • Book Reviews & Recommendations: From thrillers to character-driven stories, you’ll find books that offer more than just a good read — they’re a chance to pause. Each review includes an Escape Index rating to help you find stories that let you switch off and unwind.

Most books are available through Wellington City Libraries — because finding time for yourself shouldn’t have to cost a lot.

  • Book Challenges & Quizzes: Take part in the 2025 reading challenge or try the Reading Escape Quiz — a fun way to match your mood with your next read.

  • Personal Reflections: Life isn’t always tidy. In this space, you’ll find honest reflections on work, health, and the daily juggle — including what I’ve learned through cancer, recovery, and slowing down — and how fiction helped me find calm in the chaos.

  • Local Book Events: If you’re local, keep an eye out for updates on book fairs and literary events around Wellington. They're a great way to support good causes and discover your next favourite book (or café).

  • Newsletter: Once a month, I send out a little email with fresh book picks and helpful updates — a quiet nudge to carve out a moment for yourself. You can sign up at the bottom of the page.
