Find your next great read with the Escape Index

As someone who’s rediscovered the joy of reading, I wanted to create a way to measure how well a book allows you to truly unwind, disconnect, and immerse yourself in another world. That's why I developed the Escape Index—a unique rating system designed to help you discover books that offer the best literary escapes.

Or, if you’d rather be guided by instinct, take the Reading Escape Quiz to find the kind of story you need most right now.

What is the Escape Index?

The Escape Index is a scale I use to rate how well a book helps me leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enter a completely new world. Each book I review is scored from 1 to 10 based on how effectively it draws me into its story. I look at how immersive the setting is, how connected I feel to the characters, and how much the plot keeps me engaged. Ultimately, it’s about finding those rare books that help me completely disconnect and get lost in the narrative.

The key elements of the Escape Index

I base each Escape Index score on five key factors that contribute to a book’s escapism potential:

  • World: This measures how vividly the book’s world comes to life. Can you get lost in the setting, or does it just feel like a passing glimpse of somewhere else?

  • Vibe: How well does the book capture a specific atmosphere or feeling? Does it transport you to another time or place, like a sunny beach or an atmospheric city?

  • Pace: Does the story move at a steady rhythm that keeps you engaged, or does it drag? Is there enough momentum to keep you hooked without rushing?

  • Feels: How much do you emotionally connect with the characters and their journey? Are you invested in their emotions and what happens next, or are you more interested in the mystery or drama?

  • Escape: The ultimate measure of how well the book takes you away from reality. Does it help you truly disconnect and escape, or are you constantly aware of the world around you?

Why the Escape Index?

The world often moves at a fast pace, and it can be hard to carve out time for a true break. The Escape Index is my way of helping you find books that allow you to slow down, unplug, and dive into another world—whether you have an hour or an entire afternoon. Whether you're in the mood for a deep, immersive escape or a lighter, temporary break, the Escape Index will guide you to the book that’s just right for you.
