Rediscover the joy of reading: My 2025 Escape Challenge

Why this challenge matters

2025 is the year I’m dedicating to rediscovering the magic of books. After a life-changing plot twist — a cancer diagnosis — I realised how much I’d neglected time for myself. As a busy mum and lifelong workaholic, self-care wasn’t always a priority. But that wake-up call pushed me to slow down and prioritise my well-being. And what better way to do that than to immerse myself in the world of fiction?

This year, I’ve set myself a challenge to read at least 30 books. I’ll be stepping outside my usual reading habits, exploring new genres, and allowing myself to get lost in incredible stories. This challenge is about more than just reading — it’s about finding a way to relax, recharge, and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Escape Index

To track my journey and make it easier for you to follow along, I’ve developed the Escape Index. It’s a way of rating books based on five key factors that help me gauge how well a book allows me to escape and unwind. Each book I read will be rated on:

  • World: How well does the book transport you to another world? Is it vivid and easy to get lost in?

  • Vibe: How well does the book capture the atmosphere of the story? Does it create a specific mood or feeling, from cozy and comforting to uplifting or bittersweet?

  • Pace: How gripping is the story? Does it keep you hooked and eager to keep reading?

  • Feels: How deeply do you connect with the characters and their journey? Does the story make you feel something?

  • Escape: How much does the book allow you to escape reality? Can you forget about the real world and immerse yourself fully in the story?

Genres I’m excited to explore

This year, I’m excited to dive into a mix of genres — some familiar, others completely new. I’ll be stepping outside my usual love for murder mysteries and exploring everything from fantastical worlds in Fantasy and Sci-Fi, to the depth of Historical Fiction. I’m also looking forward to the pulse-pounding thrill of Thrillers and Mysteries. While I’m not sure if I’ll dive into any classics or non-fiction, I’m open to the possibility of one or two books that offer a fresh perspective or a dose of inspiration. The goal is to embrace a variety of escapes and find new ways to immerse myself in different worlds.

Reading for self-care

This challenge isn’t just about reading — it’s about carving out time for myself. In our fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to forget to pause and prioritise self-care. For me, reading is my way to slow down and disconnect from the stress of everyday life.

This year, I’m focusing on choosing books that not only offer an escape but also serve as a form of self-care. Whether it’s a heartfelt contemporary novel, a thrilling mystery, or an imaginative fantasy, I want to use fiction as a way to reset, recharge, and nurture my mental well-being.

Tracking my progress: 30 books in 2025

My goal is simple: read at least 30 books by the end of the year. Each book will be documented here on the site, complete with my ratings using the Escape Index. You’ll be able to follow my journey, see what books help me unwind the most, and perhaps find your next great read.

How you can join the challenge

I’d love for you to join me on this reading adventure! Whether you choose to take on the same challenge of 30 books or simply want to explore new genres and escape through fiction, I invite you to be part of this journey.

Need recommendations? I’ll be posting book lists throughout the year based on the Escape Index. Looking for something specific? Check out the reviews to see which books might be the perfect escape for you.

And if you’ve read a book that you absolutely loved or think others would enjoy, please share your recommendations with me! I’m always on the lookout for new books to add to my reading list. Whether it’s a hidden gem, a personal favourite, or something you think could offer a great escape, I’d love to hear your thoughts and include your suggestions in my future reviews.

Let’s make 2025 the year we prioritise ourselves, immerse in new worlds, and escape into fiction!

Final thoughts

Reading isn’t just about finishing books — it’s about the experience. I hope you’ll follow along with my journey, share your thoughts, and maybe even join in on the fun.
