The Year of the Locust by Terry Hayes

Book #10 of 30 in my 2025 Reading Challenge

I’m challenging myself to read 30 books in 2025 as part of my journey to reclaim “me time” after years of being a workaholic—and a recent cancer diagnosis that changed everything. Reading has become a lifeline for joy, comfort, and escape. Find out more about my 2025 Reading Challenge.

Why I picked this book

Years ago, I read I Am Pilgrim and remember absolutely loving it—smart, intense, and totally absorbing. Ever since, I’ve been waiting (somewhat impatiently) for Terry Hayes’ next novel. I knew The Year of the Locust had been delayed a few times, so when I spotted it in the Kurapae collection of the library, I practically lunged for it. I was ready for another cinematic, high-stakes thriller—and this one promised to deliver.

What’s it about?

In this gripping thriller, CIA operative Kane is sent to a volatile region where Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran meet, tasked with uncovering a devastating terrorist plot. As he navigates a dangerous world of espionage, deception, and intrigue, he uncovers more than he bargained for, leading to a series of unexpected twists and turns. The story unfolds in multiple layers, combining suspense and action with a deep dive into the complexities of international espionage.

Escape Index

  • World: Cinematic and expansive
The story spans multiple settings and crises, and it all reads like a blockbuster film. You can almost picture the scenes playing out on screen—it’s atmospheric without being overly descriptive.

  • Vibe: Suspenseful and bold
There’s a classic espionage feel here, but with a playful edge. The tone is serious when it needs to be, but it also feels like the author is having fun, and that energy carries through the book.

  • Pace: Fast and addictive
Despite its length, it flies by. The action kicks in quickly and the short chapters and constant twists make it easy to keep reading. A real page-turner.

  • Feels: Entertaining and engaging
This isn’t a deeply emotional read, but I was fully invested in the lead character—brave, intelligent, a little sensitive—and his chaotic world. He’s the kind of spy you want to root for.

  • Escape: A high-octane thrill ride
This book was exactly what I needed to shake up my reading list—a big, bold thriller with plenty of drama, action, and unexpected turns.

A cinematic, twist-filled spy thriller that’s pure entertainment from start to finish.
— Escape Index Score: 8/10

My takeaway

The Year of the Locust is one of those books that’s just made to be devoured. It has that “read like a movie” quality—fast-paced, full of action, and loaded with twists. The main character felt like someone you could cast in an instant—smart, brave, emotionally aware, and constantly in the thick of it. There are moments of genuine surprise, and I loved that the author clearly had fun with it. For me, it hit the sweet spot of escapist reading—smart, satisfying, and impossible to put down.
