The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

Book #1 of 30 in my 2025 Reading Challenge

I’m challenging myself to read 30 books in 2025 as part of my journey to reclaim “me time” after years of being a workaholic—and a recent cancer diagnosis that changed everything. Reading has become a lifeline for joy, comfort, and escape. Find out more about my 2025 Reading Challenge.

Why I picked this book

This was the book that rekindled my love of reading and reminded me how important it is to carve out time for myself. Normally I’m a diehard murder mystery girl—give me a twisty thriller and I’m happy. But after receiving The Flatshare from my lovely friend, I decided to try something lighter. A romance where two people fall for each other through sticky notes? I was intrigued—and I’m so glad I gave it a go.

What’s it about?

Tiffy needs to escape her toxic ex, and Leon needs extra income to support his brother in prison. They come up with an unusual arrangement: Tiffy moves into Leon’s flat, sharing the space without ever meeting him. Leon works nights as a hospice nurse, and Tiffy works days, so they never overlap. They communicate through post-it notes, and their friendship blossoms into something more.

Escape Index

  • World: Quirky and cozy
Beth O’Leary creates a world that feels like it could be right next door. The flat, with its clacking flip-flops and notes on the fridge, felt like a character in itself.

  • Vibe: Heartwarming and humourous
This book is full of charm and warmth. It’s light on the surface, but there are lovely, layered moments of emotional depth that sneak up on you.

  • Pace: Steady and engaging
It’s not a page-turning thriller, but the slow-build connection between Leon and Tiffy had me eager to keep reading. It’s a “just one more chapter” kind of book.

  • Feels: Relatable and genuine
Both characters are healing from their own pasts, and their growth feels believable and touching. I saw bits of myself in Tiffy—messy, hopeful, trying her best.

  • Escape Factor: 100% feel-good
This was exactly the kind of gentle, funny, uplifting read I needed. It gave me that fuzzy, content feeling—like a warm cuppa on a rainy day.

A quirky, big-hearted romance that made me smile and restored a little faith in love.
— Escape Index Score: 8/10

My takeaway

The Flatshare totally surprised me. It was funny, smart, and full of heart. Tiffy and Leon’s unconventional way of falling in love—through notes and shared spaces—was such a fresh take on romance. I didn’t expect to feel so invested, but I truly rooted for them.

What I especially appreciated was how the book quietly tackled bigger topics like emotional abuse and grief, all while keeping a hopeful tone. It reminded me that connection can grow in the most unexpected places.

If you’re craving something light but not fluffy, this one strikes the right balance. I smiled a lot while reading it—and that, these days, is golden.
