Opal by Patricia Wolf

Book #11 of 30 in my 2025 Reading Challenge

I’m challenging myself to read 30 books in 2025 as part of my journey to reclaim “me time” after years of being a workaholic—and a recent cancer diagnosis that changed everything. Reading has become a lifeline for joy, comfort, and escape. Find out more about my 2025 Reading Challenge.

Why I picked this book

I’ve already read a couple of Australian-based books this year, including The Other Side of Beautiful — a quirky road trip story through the outback. Opal caught my attention as it fell into my usual genre of murder-mystery, and it seemed like the perfect fast-paced read to balance out my other books (like Intermezzo and The Year of the Locust). With three books in three weeks on the agenda, I needed something that would keep me turning pages.

What’s it about

Opal is the third installment in the DS Lucas Walker series. When a torrential flood traps a small mining community in outback Queensland, tensions escalate following the brutal double murder of an opal miner and his secret lover. As local authorities scramble to investigate, DS Walker, who is visiting the area with his sister, becomes embroiled in the case. With roads impassable and suspects aplenty, Walker must navigate the complexities of the tight-knit community to uncover the truth before the killer strikes again.

This is a fast-paced, page-turner with short chapters and a constantly moving plot. The suspense never lets up, making it an easy, satisfying read that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

  • Feels: Compelling and suspenseful
The characters are relatable and straightforward, with clear motivations. The lead detective, Lucas, is easy to root for, and the tension between him and the other characters adds an extra layer of complexity to the story. Not deeply emotional, but definitely engaging.

  • Escape: A suspenseful, flood-locked mystery
This book was the perfect quick read to dive into—a gripping murder-mystery set in the isolated outback with twists and turns that kept me hooked until the very end. A great pick for anyone craving a thrilling, fast-paced escape.

A solid, enjoyable mystery that provides a great escape, with a satisfying (if not groundbreaking) reveal. Perfect for fans of quick, atmospheric thrillers.

My takeaway

I loved how Patricia Wolf created an atmosphere so immersive that I could almost feel the dust of the outback and hear the buzzing heat - flies biting the eyes! The mystery kept me engaged without being too heavy, and the characters were just enough to make me care about who was behind the crime. A perfect read if you want a fast-paced, atmospheric mystery without it being overly complicated. I did feel like the ending could have been a bit more nuanced, but for a quick crime novel, it wrapped up nicely.
